Progress Report #6

Apr. 27, 2012

What have you been doing and how does it relate to your Progress Report?

I have just recently finished my print book and have started scanning and digitally archiving all of my recent work in preparation of the art show.

What have you learned?

I learned that archiving work and keeping your website updated is just as important as the work itself. If you make awesome art but don’t show anyone it belittles the art. Art is meant to be a shared experience.

What is your next step?

Hopefully, I can finish all the scanning and resizing and then finish up my preparation for the art show. Which is swiftly approaching.

What have you been doing and how does it relate to your Project Proposal?

I have been working on my moleskin print book. It is really fun to be exploring abstract narratives in a book while working with the familiar medium of printing and mono prints. I really like the progress that I am making and it should be interesting to see how it pans out.

What have you learned?

I have learn more mono-printing techniques and a lot about composition and color choice. For printing it is really important to make that before you print you are happy with the composition because it is hard to go back in and change it.

What is your next step?

My next step is to finish this book. It has 40+ pages in it and I have only done about 10 or so prints. So I still have some work to do.

Progress Report #4

Mar. 16

What have you been doing and how does it relate to your Project Proposal?

In class, I have finished my second book and started the last one. I have also been working on the memory project and my sketchbook. I have deviated from my proposal a little because I started to run out of ideas for pages in my novel.

What have you learned?

I have learned about pace. Sometimes, it is best to take a break for a couple days and then come back to tackle to problem with new ideas. That is what I did with my last book and it worked out well.

What is your next step?

Hopefully, finish my last book. Then maybe go back to prints.

What have you been doing and how does it relate to your Project Proposal?

I almost done my second book and about to start my second. I have been out of the classroom a lot due to robotics and that has slowed my progress a little. But not a lot.

What have you learned?

I still do not know how long I work. I find that some days I am really effective while other days it seams like I work really hard and produce nothing. This project has posed a lot more challenges then expected.

What is your next step?

My next step is to continue with my plan and finish my second book. Then go on the third and final book.

Progress Report #2

Feb 17th

What have you been doing and how does it relate to your Project Proposal?

I have finished my first book! It took longer then expected, but I really liked the result. I feel like this could be a very nice series.

What have you learned?

I have learned that sometimes you can not rush art. I like fast results (part of why I really like prints). But the sewing and stitching takes time and patience that I need to work on.

What is your next step?

Start my second book!

Progress Report #1

Feb. 3, 2012

What have you been doing and how does it relate to your Project Proposal?

As of right now, I am about halfway done my first “book”. It took me longer then expected to make and bind it. But I am happy with how it came out so I am excited to continue. The idea is to portray my personal language visually as a means to record and comment on my personal identity at this time.

What have you learned?

Well for one thing, I learned just how hard sowing is and I have a new found respect for that skill. I have also learned how hard it is to draw symbols and explanations without text. I am not really big on text in art but now that I can’t use it, I realize just how amazing it is.

What is your next step?

My next step is to finish my first book and then start on the sequel.  The sequel will deal with how I interact with others. Look out for it.

Progress Report #8

January 6th

What have you been doing and how does it relate to your Project Proposal?

I finished my third map. Then I decided not to make any more due to the fact that I am running low on printing ink and because I was starting to get sick of it. I tried to work on it, but I just couldn’t get myself to do anymore of them. So spent the rest of the time working on my sketchbook and my website.

What have you learned?

I learned a lot about knowing when to give up on a project and when to push on. If you really just can not stand a project (like I did with the maps) then you will make horrible quality work and that is a waste of time.

What is your next step?

Well after I finish getting my website and sketchbook together for the end of the marking period, I will start brainstorming new project ideas. I might do something really different and move away from abstractions… you never know.

Progress Report #7

December 16th

What have you been doing and how does it relate to your Project Proposal?

My current project has been taking longer then excepted. I greatly underestimated how long it took to make a quality map. As of right now I only have three done. I am still deciding if I want to continue with them or not. But for now, I am taking a short break to work on my sketch book.

What have you learned?

I learned that while sometimes a process can be a wonderful thing, it can also be restricting and annoying. This project has really shown me that not is all and good in process land. Sometimes you need to break it to get a significant result.

What is your next step?

My next steps are to work on the foundation of my second sketch book project. Then, after I clear my head of maps, I can do back and see if I can improve my current ones and maybe make some more of them.

Progress Report #6

December 2ed

What have you been doing and how does it relate to your Project Proposal?

My newest project is based on the idea of printing and maps. I have been finding areas that have some sort of importance to me and then made abstract maps about them. So far I have made two, one of Ambler and one of Matamoras. I just started one of Norristown.

What have you learned?

From this I learned about doing things that are uninteresting. I really don’t like the inking of all the streets and would much rather skip that step. But it is vital to each piece and has to be done.

What is your next step?

My next step is to finish my map of Norristown and then make a fourth one, possibly of Chestnut Hill.

Progress Report #5

November 11th

What have you been doing and how does it relate to your Project Proposal?

I have continued my printmaking and have started a high quality, more serious series of prints. I really enjoy following the pattern of that I set up, of a grid made of stamp blocks. I follow the same steps for each piece but they are all very unique and different. I really enjoyed the development of a process.

What have you learned?

I have learned that process is just as important as the end result. The process of how I made the art can really effect the end result. It is really interesting to me because most people just feel like the finish product is important when really for me, it is the process.

What is your next step?

I want to finish this series. After that, I plan on doing more prints but with mix media and different techniques.

Progress Report #4

Date Due: 10/28/2011

What have you been doing and how does it relate to your Project Proposal?

I have been continuing my investigation on abstract printmaking. I have also incorporated mono printing and some other techniques non-stamping techniques like painting the ink.

What have you learned?

The biggest think I learned from this was process. There is a process that you MUST follow in order to make stamps and print. While in painting you have guidelines that are there to help you but you can stray from. So this is a very different experience for me.

What is your next step?

My next step is going to be to extend the time line for this project. I have come to my deadline and I have made some pretty interesting pieces of work. But I want to do more and continue with this media.

Progress Report #3

Date Due: 10/14/2011

What have you been doing and how does it relate to your Project Proposal?

Recently, I have been using stamps to make abstractions. I really enjoyed making the stamps themselves. But, It takes me more time than expected to make each one (about two classes each). Also, I have started to try mono-printing. While, that is not in my project proposal specifically, I feel that it falls into the realm of print. So I can do it.

What have I learned?

Well first off, I learned that printing ink acts much differently than paint. It is thicker and has less give to it. But, I still really enjoy using it with the brayer and stamps. Secondly, I learned that the set up for a painting is just as (or even more) important than actually painting. I like to set up my color pallet and such before hand so that influences my paintings.

What in your next step?

Hopefully, I can move from this practice stage to a more formal step. Maybe I can increase the quality of my materials and think through each painting more fully. Also, maybe I can make a connected series of works instead of just a bunch of prints.

Progress Report #2

Date Due: 9/30/2011

What have you been doing and how does it relate to your Project Proposal?

I have been working on my new project of abstractions. I have been enjoying it a lot and liked experimenting with the palette knife.

What have you learned?

I’ve learned a lot about how paint dries and how wet paint and dry paint interact. In one piece, I have added a new layer almost everyday, so that is giving an interesting effect of the wet on dry paint.

What is your next step?

My next step is to continue on this project. I have two done and three in process. So I still need to do another piece and finish my other three to reach my goal of six abstractions.

Progress Report #1

Date Due: 9/16

What have you been doing and how does it relate to your Project Proposal?

I am still working on my series on hands. But I have shifted it to more abstractions than realistic interpretations. I still have elements of realism but in a more abstract way. I’m struggling a lot with this project. It seams that everyday I want to take a new direction and it is frustrating.

What have you learned?
I have learned that you have to find an idea or concept early on and stick with it. It is nearly impossible to try to do a set of anything with out a solid idea, and I am feeling that first hand right now.
What is your next step?
My next step is to try and go back into my six pieces. They are not all related, so Mr. Miller is going to help me brainstorm ways to connect the work and help improve the set as a whole.
